Driving Report Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 DI-D 4WD

You don't get younger ...

Over time, your own demands on a vehicle change. When I was young, it was above all my desire for a very sporty vehicle. A car had to give in dynamically, drive sportily along country roads and exude the special charm of the powerful vehemence of youthful passion in the parking lot in front of the disco.

Something like that will change someday. At the latest when you have a family and a dog - the demands on an automobile are completely different. And while you wanted to feel and experience every aspect of the street in your younger years, after a few hundred thousand kilometers the wishes of your daily companions are completely different. May he please spare me from the stress out there, may he please relieve me of the annoying little things and should he please take a little bit.

As you become more mature yourself, you are looking for vehicles that can do more than “make an impression” - for me, this test car clearly belongs to the second phase of my driving life:

In the driving report:

Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 DI-D 4WD

1.000 kilometers in the new Outlander - Mud fun?

Mitsubishi introduced the third model generation of the Outlander in Germany last September and immediately said goodbye to the new Mitsubishi face, the Jetfighter grille, with this new generation.

The Outlander was so successful that the French were happy to sell it as an SUV under their own name and so there was also a Peugeot 4007 and a Peugeot XNUMX and one in addition to the “original” with the diamonds in the grill Citroën C-Crosser. With the nNew Outlander the Japanese want to top the successful sales figures of the predecessor and speak of a “dignified touring car” in the form of an “innovative crossover”.

For me, the new Outlander - especially the driven version with seven seats and the diesel engine - is a kind of family station wagon, only much more practical - thanks to the more ground clearance and real all-wheel drive.

Personally, I miss the dynamic front of the old Outlander.

[one_third last=”no”] ECO mode: Eco is modern and so the new Outlander also got an “ECO function” and thus a button of the same name. If you press this, the driver should be given additional savings potential. The engine characteristics are adapted and the air conditioning system works less powerfully. In addition, the all-wheel drive of the Outlander will be converted to 4WD Eco.

Gasoline or diesel? It often remains a matter of faith, but especially in vehicles from the segment of the SUV and Crossover goes in my opinion, nothing s.ein diesel engine over. Mitsubishi offers both the gasoline and the diesel with 150 PS, but the diesel also brings along 380 Nm instead of the manageable 195 Nm of the gasoline. Powerful AND economical? Diesel!

4WD: At Mitsubishi, the buyer traditionally also gets a four-wheel drive with real benefits. In the new Outlander, the driver can choose from three settings: 4WD ECO is the variant in which the Outlander is primarily a crossover with front-wheel drive. Those who ignore the eco-madness drive in a 4WD car and leave the power distribution to the clever drive train. Those who like to let it fly dynamically through forests and meadows can switch to 4WD-Lock and enjoy the rear-heavy distribution of the drive forces. I personally recommend this setting for everyday life - Eco and Auto? Unnecessary! [/ one_third]

Mitsubishi was keen not to overuse the new Outlander optically, but in the end a piece of brand identity was lost. You can tell by the external appearance, however, the will to make the new Outlander more aerodynamic. And even in its function as a “dignified touring car” it is still clearly arranged in terms of its overall size and still looks darn big in the interior. Mitsubishi succeeds in turning the outwardly manageable new Outlander with its total length of 4,66 meters and width of 1,8 meters into a real giant in the interior.

It should be practical. Noble and good.

It is exactly this type of interior that you are looking for as a family dad and / or dog owner. With up to seven seats you have enough space to drive half of the football team of the son man to the away game and yet remains a manageable trunk volume left that is enough to bring more than the opposing jerseys home.

Dogs love the still manageable height of the loading sill and prefer to enter the Outlander than in off-road vehicles, which with more ground clearance, but also with a higher sill call for a Sunday walk.Mitsubishi Outlander as a dog vehicle

In the cockpit, my first act remains the "fumbling attack" on the surfaces of the interior: And I am amazed about the foamed dashboard and the large piano lacquer surfaces in the new Outlander. However, many other areas of the interior are still among the preferred retreats for the hard plastic materials used in premium automobiles. The new Outlander not only shines with its piano lacquer and improved interior quality

I particularly like the large adjustment range of the front seats and the steering column, which is now adjustable in height and length. A little strange, however, the stupidly hidden switches for the seat heating. The Outlander is a real family friend with its seven seats, spacious interior and practical features!

The price - a question of equipment:

My test car came to the test as a 2.2 diesel with 150 hp and with the “Instyle” equipment. This combination is currently also at the top of the price list and hits with 39.890 € in the current account of the inclined car buyer.

The diesel is also available in the basic version: Invite with front-wheel drive (€ 30.690), as Invite with all-wheel drive (€ 32.690) and as Intense (€ 36.190). If you don't drive much and don't miss the pressure of the 380 Nm from the diesel engine, you can also choose from three Outlander variants with a petrol engine. Here is also the “Outlander entry” in the form of the 150 hp petrol engine with front-wheel drive in the Inform equipment for € 24.490. You can also choose from the Invite equipment variant with front or all-wheel drive (2WD € 27.840 and 4WD € 31.640)

My personal recommendation:

If you can do without leather equipment, the glass sunroof and the somewhat immature “Mitsubishi Multi Communication System”, you will find the right Outlander in the 150 hp diesel with all-wheel drive in the € 36.190 inexpensive “Intense” variant.

Deficiencies of the family friend:

The steering loses its precision in the central position and you have the feeling that the driver no longer has direct contact with the road - just as annoying as it is immature: The current software version on the “Mitsubishi Entertainment and Navi-System”. A software update, which will hopefully be available soon, will make operation more practical and, above all, more speed in operator guidance.

[toggle title=”Benefits“]The effective all-wheel drive and the powerful engine make the practical crossover a real multi-purpose vehicle for people with increased space needs. [/toggle] [toggle title=”Disadvantages“]The multimedia navigation system and the spongy steering in the middle position. [/toggle]

Test consumption:

  • Test consumption min: 6.5l over 100km
  • Test consumption max: 8.9l on 100km
  • Test consumption cut: 7.5l on 100km
  • All values 150PS Diesel with manual 6 gearbox

Perfect:

  • The large interior and the space despite seven seats.
  • The potent and economical engine.
  • Price-performance ratio.

Missing:

  • Modern assistance systems are only available in the automatic model.
  • Active cornering light.

Does not work

  • The current SW version of the entertainment system.

Driving report - the conclusion:

Mitsubishi Outlander driving report matsch fun

"Mud fun in the Outlander?"

The new Outlander is a car for pragmatists and Mitsubishi would do well to develop a brand face with more dynamism and long-term perspective. The vehicles of the brand with the three diamonds in the logo are currently beaten in Germany in value. Especially in the area of potent and efficient diesel engines and perfectly working four-wheel drive Mitsubishi is still an automotive manufacturer who can compete with the best.

Here, however, the fine work in the interior and the detail work must not be forgotten. German motorists need only a few of the gadgets that the Mitsubishi own navigation and entertainment center has. A logical and fast-reacting interface and user guidance would be more useful here.

When it comes to everyday life, the Outlander mainly does "muddy fun”When he can show his practical talents - off the road as well as with the family and the dog from the Sunday excursion.
