Driving Report: Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi Outlander - SUV. Not mainstream

In the third generation of the Outlanders one recognizes very strongly the enterprise language from Nippon. We are testing the Outlander 2.2 Diesel (150 PS), ClearTec in the top variant, concentrating exclusively on its suitability for everyday use.

Since 1996, a competitive Japanese company founded the segment of the SUV, a lot has happened in this market. Mitsubishi moved in the year 2001 and brought the Outlander to the customer. Now the 3 stands. Generation in the showrooms of this world and we can look forward to a vehicle that does not come mainstream therefore and almost polarized with its design.

More courage to round design

The design of Outlanders is certainly not for everyone, especially for those who prefer the mainstream and want to buy a vehicle of a German or importing car supplier. But for friends of round shapes, who are also something out of the ordinary, the Outlander is a must.

The cockpit inclined to the driver

Everything is easy to read
Everything is easy to read

All controls are inclined towards the driver and that makes driving the Outlander very comfortable. The 6,1 ″ display in the middle promises a high level of communication, provided that you have tried out the first commands and internalized the logic associated with them. Unfortunately, connecting a smartphone was not as easy as expected.

The different materials and colors give the Outlander despite the differences a dignified appearing interior. Even if Japanese automobiles repeatedly say that big drivers do not find an optimal seating position, this is just the thing Outlander not the case. The height- and depth-adjustable steering wheel can always find a good position. The freedom of movement in the rear is very generous, because the back seat can be moved by 25 centimeters in length (the predecessor, it was only eight inches). Negative side effect: The entrance to the third row of seats is reserved exclusively for very smaller adults or children until 12 years.

Very good ride comfort

Even on difficult trails a good game
Even on difficult trails a good game

The ride comfort of the Outlanders is only to be evaluated as very convenient. Even sudden potholes, etc. masters the vehicle loose, with load changes, he remains sovereign.

The 2,2-liter diesel engine with the 6 manual transmission drives the 1,65 tons vehicle neatly forward and even when cruising comfortably with 120 km / h, an overtaking maneuver with the 360 Nm is easily possible. Still, we have to keep reminding that the Outlander is dominated by both the outside and the inside of the diesel's nailing. In the four-wheel version with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, which we drove in the test, the saving potential is increased by connecting the 4WD Eco function. This connection controls the engine, the air conditioning works with less power and the propulsion takes over almost exclusively the front axle. If the rear axle is added, traction problems have arisen

Price question

The Outlander Diesel is priced in for this segment with a starting price of € 30.790 "average". If you order the Outlander in the top version with € 38.890, you only have the options Metallic / Pearl effect paint (€ 580), 6-speed automatic transmission (€ 1.800) and the driver assistance systems (€ 1.900). The package of driver assistance systems with adaptive cruise control (ACC), rear-end warning system (FCM) and Lane Keeping Assist (LDW) is more than adequate in terms of value for money, but Mitsubishi combines this option exclusively with the 6 automatic transmission. Thus, this would also be € 3.700, which is more likely to deter customers than to encourage buying.

Everyday fitness / Conclusion

2014-10-31 15.36.00

The generous payload (up to 575 kg) and the long range make the Outlander a very suitable for everyday use vehicle. If the payload is not enough, you get the opportunity to transport more 80 kg on the roof rails. Whether shopping in the supermarket / hardware store or traveling on the streets through Germany, the Outlander makes here only a good figure. The customer who chooses to buy an Outlander will be able to use the vehicle for his personal use in no time.

With a tank filling, a range of up to 1.000 kilometers can be realized, according to the manufacturer. For the actual test consumption, we barely exceed the manufacturer's values and achieve an average consumption of around 6,8 liters in 681 driven kilometers.

In the event of a puncture, at least one temporary spare wheel is on board. This is conveniently bolted to the underbody of the vehicle.

The perceived all-round view is very generous and creates a comfortable situation even for unsafe drivers. The ends of the body can be easily assessed, not least because of the high seating position. When reversing, a rear camera assists you, making safe parking possible. The large exterior mirrors also offer an excellent view to the rear. The xenon light ensures good visibility at night, and the daytime running lights make the Outlander easy to see even in poor lighting conditions during the day.
