Driving Report: The Mercedes-Benz C300 BlueTec Hybrid

At the market launch Mercedes-Benz surprisingly offers the new C-Class only with a diesel engine, the C220 BlueTEC with 170PS, With the somewhat grumpy diesel is always enough motorized, but it is quite the desire to underline the visual sovereignty of the youngest middle-class sedan from Stuttgart with a corresponding motorization. Those who now come to mind in a pleasant six-cylinder combustion engine, unfortunately have to disappoint the Swabian inventors. In the future they do not want to breathe more power into their diesels with generous cubic capacity, more cylinders or thicker turbos, but with an electric motor. my-auto-blog-editor Axel drove now ahead of the future self-igniting top model of the series, the C300 BlueTEC Hybrid.

The decelerator, or: "Saving has its price."

downsizing, This word dominates current the daily business of engine developers in the automotive industry. Small supercharged engines should be the solution in competition for low fleet consumption and environmentally friendly CO2 emissions. And if that's not enough, then an electric motor has to be produced. In the tested 300er, this provides additional power of 20kW, which corresponds to traditional 27 horsepower. This helps to push the CO2 output below the magical 100 grams per km (to be exact, on 94g / km) and of course also reduces the consumption on the stingy 3,6l on 100km. Of course, this value corresponds to a measurement method that reflects the reality only poorly.

But how is everyday life in the C300 BlueTEC Hybrid designed on a sunny spring day in southern France?

To say it in advance: very pleasant! You have to know that the Mild Hybrid is based on the C250 BlueTEC, which will be launched in the fall with 204 PS and 500 Nm. The additional electric motor is integrated in the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and delivers not only more horsepower, if required, but 250 additional Newtonmeter torque, which can be called unnoticed as a special extra boost thrust when accelerating or overtaking. But the twin-engine drive unit can do more and you have to listen very carefully or look carefully. Because the C300, sails, drives electrically, recuperates and displays this if necessary also proudly in one of the numerous displays. You hardly notice it in normal driving, when the diesel engine goes unnoticed in standby mode and let the sedan with a drag coefficient of 0,24 blessed sedan sail through the streets. Or if, after the start of the C-Class, you are surprised to find that everything stays silent and you can even roll on the accelerator with the power of the electric motor.

The desired sovereignty is thus guaranteed and combined with the Driving Assistance Package Plus, which includes the proximity control system Distronic Plus, the active Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assistant, driving is almost negligible. The optional air suspension Airmatic finally gives you the rest. In the "Comfort" level, you glide along and can reflect on life in the C-Class or devote yourself to in-car entertainment. Here, the fourth generation C shines with the well-known rotary and push controller in combination with a novel touchpad that hardly baffles users of smartphones or tablets. With the familiar finger gestures, you can zoom in, wipe through the menus or write your next navigation target with the index finger.

The last destination entered in this test drive is Aix-en-Provence and after 105 varied kilometers, a test drive begins in the center of the port city of Marseille, taking us on country roads northwest to the Michelin test center in Fontange and then back east on the motorway in the small Provencal town above the Mediterranean coast. The Swabian Mild Hybrid achieved an average consumption of 4,9 liters with two drivers without much effort and restrictions. Not a bad value for a 1,6 tons heavy car with 231 PS. But more important, as the fuel consumption is the knowledge: The C300 BlueTEC Hybrid is an excellent touring car, the distances can imperceptibly shrink while the driver latently decelerates. But such a rolling wellness oasis will of course have its price. Although Mercedes-Benz has not yet published any prices, it can be assumed that the base price is tight towards 50.000 Euro, plus a number of seductive equipment options.

Saving has its price.
