E-car bestseller

The German e-car charts are on the move. In March, a US sedan ousted a German small car from the top.

The Tesla Model 3 replaced the VW Up as the most popular electric car in Germany in March. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the mid-range sedan had 3.699 new registrations and a market share of 12,3 percent of the 30.101 e-vehicles reported for the first time this month.

There was no change in the plug-in hybrids, where the VW Golf again led the popularity scale with 2.792 new registrations and a market share of just under 8 percent. The top-selling fuel cell car with 63 units was the newly launched Toyota Mirai, which kept its current only competitor, the Hyundai Nexo, at a clear distance thanks to its 80 percent market share.

In March, the KBA registered a total of 65.760 new cars with electric drives. This corresponds to a share of 22,5 percent of the total number of newly registered vehicles.
