Millions of e-cars will have to be supplied with electricity in the future. In principle, no problem, says a new study. However, the conditions must be right.
Europe's power grids can handle more than 100 million E-cars cope. As calculated by the Electricity Association Eurelectric and the management consultancy EY, the power supply will remain secure even with exponential growth in e-mobility. However, preparations are necessary.
With the current number, the power grid still holds
The experts expect around 135 million vehicles by 2035, around 132 million more than today. By then, 65 million charging stations will have to be connected to the network, 85 percent of them in private households and 4 percent in public spaces. Uncontrolled charging could overload local networks from as little as 50 percent, which is why, according to the experts, intelligent control of refueling processes is necessary.
Specifically, the association recommends digitizing the power grid in order to understand, predict and optimize customer behavior, the effects on the grid and demand. In addition, intelligent chargers and storage systems are required to buffer short-term high demand.
