Bicycle rack for pedelecs

Bicycle racks mounted on the trailer coupling at the rear are very popular. Stiftung Warentest has examined 8 specimens that are suitable for pedelec transport.

Bicycle racks for the trailer coupling are a smart way to piggyback even heavy pedelecs on the back of your car. Stiftung Warentest has examined eight current carrier models in more detail and, in addition to a clear winner, also selected some good alternatives. However, some test persons revealed weaknesses in crash safety, which in several cases led to the grade “poor”.

The main focus of the test was on safety, which in the case of the test winner Thule EasysFolf XT 2 alone was rated as "good"; The crash test, emergency braking and evasive maneuvers gave by far the best results. In terms of handling and durability, the Thule candidate, the most expensive at 665 euros and with an overall grade of 1,9, did better than all other test subjects. The overall rating of “good” (2,5) was also given to the Eufab Premium II Plus and Oris Traveler II carriers, which are comparatively inexpensive at EUR 450 each. They were downgraded due to the stability of the fastening elements, but similar to the test winner for the other test criteria could convince. The result of the Bikelander from Westfalia, which cost 480 euros, was quite similar, but with its overall grade of 2,6 it was classified as “satisfactory”.

The four candidates Uebler i21, Atera Strada Vario 2, MFT Compatc 2E-1 and the XLC Azura Xtra LED VC-C05 were each downgraded and therefore punished with a “sufficient” or “poor” overall. Stiftung Warentest advises against their use due to the loosening of parts or the entire carrier during the crash test.
