The German autobahns are getting smart. An automatic construction site warning now starts on the first sections of the route.
On German autobahns, drivers are now warned of day-to-day roadworks via WLAN. The federal autobahn GmbH is now initially introducing the new connectivity service on selected corridors, and it is to function throughout Germany by 2023. Further functions are also planned for the future. The aim of networking through the “Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems” (C-IST) is to increase traffic safety.
If a vehicle approaches a construction site, the driver is informed, according to Autobahn GmbH, before the construction site comes into view. However, the necessary reception technology in the vehicle is a prerequisite. So far, VW in particular has relied on the networking of its cars via WLAN and offers the service in the Golf VIII as well as in the ID models. Other service providers can call up the information via the federal mobility data marketplace (MDM) and bring it into the vehicle via mobile communications.
