Engine construction for cars has been characterized by downsizing and a move away from diesel for years. At Mazda, however, people seem to think differently.
Diesel and six cylinders seem to many to be outdated. However, car manufacturer Mazda sees it differently and is now presenting a completely new in-line six-cylinder with a displacement of 3,3 liters, which is to be launched on the market in early 2023 in the new CX-60 SUV model as the e-Skyactiv D.
From Mazda's point of view, the longitudinally installed six-ender is an appropriate unit for the new series. Despite the additional two cylinders, the engine should weigh as much as the well-known 2,2-liter four-cylinder diesel Skyactiv D. In the 147 kW/200 hp version, the 3,3-liter engine alone drives the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission . Alternatively, the R6 in combination with all-wheel drive will also be available in a 187 kW/254 hp version.
In addition to good driving performance, the common rail injection system, which has been upgraded with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, promises smooth running. According to WLTP measurements, the Euro 7 diesel consumes 4,9 liters per 100 kilometers or 5,3 liters in the case of the all-wheel drive version.
As a further drive novelty, Mazda has announced an R6 petrol engine with a displacement of three liters, which is equipped with an SPCCI compression ignition system that improves efficiency. Engines with this technology are also called Diesotto. Both R6 units will also power the seven-seater CX-2023, which has also been announced for 80.
