Mazda3 - The small diesel completes the offer

At Mazda they actually remain loyal to the naturally aspirated engine. So on the side of the petrol engine. With diesel engines, however, it is not possible without turbocharging. However, the well-known 2.2 liter four-cylinder is quite an announcement for the compact Mazda3. Not everyone needs a 4.5 HP diesel engine in a 150 meter long compact. Now there is also a smaller alternative under the hood of the Japanese drawn in Kodo design.

Downsizing with sense

Presentation: Mazda3 with 105 HP diesel engine

With a displacement of 1.5 liters, the new diesel engine is once again a little smaller than the engines in the competitive environment. However, that doesn't matter to the all-aluminum motor. Should the others use 1.6 liters in the Golf, Auris or Seat - here the 1.5 liters are enough to provide 270 Nm.

But the engine is not entirely new. You could already order it in the CX-3 and the Mazda2 (Polo class). So now also in the Mazda from the golf segment. Downsizing and tightening belts are the motto. The 3.8 liters that Mazda gives for NEDC consumption sound pretty exciting. A 3 in front of the decimal point used to be only for exhausted economy cars. The Mazda3 da, on the other hand, has space for 5. And a decent trunk. And, of course, equipment that is expected in the segment. From city emergency braking assistants to amenities such as automatic climate control etc.

The almost 1.3-ton Mazda3 can easily handle the 150 PS diesel. But even with the new engine, the compact Japanese is sufficiently quick. Anyone interested in the smaller diesel will probably do so because of the attractive consumption values and the associated savings in everyday life.

The 105 HP and 270 Nm are enough to accelerate the Mazda3, if you aim to accelerate from 11.0 to 100 km / h within 3 seconds. The Mazda 185 claims the left lane with the clever diesel engine up to XNUMX km / h.

That the new diesel engine with variable turbine geometry comes up, has been elaborately trimmed quietly and has been compressed very low for a diesel (14.8: 1), all of which gives the driver at most a gnarled driving noise in the city.

Get in from € 20.690

According to the configurator, the list price is € 23.190 - but if you put together the days for the Mazda3, you will see € 20.690 in the Center-Line configuration. And € 23.890 in the high-quality Sports Line equipment. The larger diesel is available from € 25.590 (RRP: € 28.090,00). With this difference of € 1.700, fuel can easily be paid for 22.500 km for small diesel.

Whether in the end it should be the “small” diesel or the big one? You have to decide during a personal test drive. And then you should have the “notchback” variant shown to you. Because the Japanese design, dubbed KODO, makes for what is probably the most attractive “compact sedan” that has been seen to date. Almost a four-door coupé and they are really in fashion at the moment.
