Millions of one-eyed people on the go

Blenders, one-eyed people and unwilling blinkers: the seasonal light test has again uncovered numerous deficiencies in the lighting of German cars.

More than one in four cars in Germany has inadequate lighting. This is suggested by the evaluation of the Light Test 2020. During the voluntary campaign, 28,7 percent of the cars tested showed problems with dipped headlights and the like. In the previous year, the figure was 28,8 percent.

At 9 percent, the most common defect was again a headlight that was set too high. The proportion of blenders has increased slightly compared to the previous year (8,5 percent). Front lights that were set too low were criticized in 8,4 percent of the vehicles. All in all, every fifth car is on the road with inadequate headlights, and 3,2 percent of the vehicles even had a headlight that failed completely. Extrapolated to the 47 million cars in Germany, this results in around 1,5 million vehicles.

The “Light Test” campaign, organized by the traffic watchdog and the ZDK, has existed since 1956. The entire lighting is checked free of charge at participating workshops. Small defects are corrected immediately, spare parts and extensive adjustment work must be paid for.
