Plug-in hybrid with a good prognosis

The range of pure electric cars is increasing all the time. Nevertheless, he keeps Plug-in hybrid drive ZF believes it is justified.

Despite the boom in all-electric cars, the plug-in hybrid has a future. At least for the supplier ZF. There will also be a market for part-time electricity customers beyond 2030, explained CEO Wolf-Henning Scheider at the IAA Mobility in Munich. From his point of view, however, greater ranges of 100 kilometers and more are necessary.

The first plug-in hybrids are already achieving these values, and numerous other models are likely to be added in the coming year at the latest. Then in Germany only models with an e-range of at least 60 kilometers will be funded by the e-car premium. Alongside the United Kingdom, Germany is the largest market for socket-outlet hybrids in Europe. At the IAA, ZF is presenting the latest generation of its electrified eight-speed transmission for plug-in hybrids, which now compactly integrates the power electronics into the transmission housing.

In the long term, however, the future of technology will probably lie outside Europe, for example in the USA and China. There the combustion engines can bridge the gaps that still exist in the charging infrastructure. In Europe, on the other hand, technology is constantly being discussed because it only realizes its theoretical climate protection potential if it is used as much as possible in e-mode. However, studies suggest that many users forego regular charging.
