SUV boom: record in the first half of the year

More than one in three New cars is now a SUVs. And the demand for the fashionable Crossovers According to a forecast, it will continue to grow.

The SUV boom has reached a new record market share. In the first half of the year, almost 35 percent of all newly registered cars in Germany fell into this segment, according to the Center Automotive Research (CAR). This made them by far the most popular type of vehicle.

The SUV boom has continued since 2010

The share of SUVs in the number of new cars sold has been increasing steadily since the beginning of the millennium. In 2000 it was just under 3 percent, ten years later it was 11 percent. In the following decade, demand increased rapidly, rising to almost 2020 percent by 32. According to CAR director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, the new record expected at the end of 2021 is not the end point of the development either: For 2025 he expects a market share of at least 45 percent.

The reasons for the ongoing boom include the benefits valued by customers such as the larger amount of space, the strong sense of security and the ease of entry. The strong demand is also leading to a growing supply - in the past twelve months alone, according to CAR counting, 15 new models came onto the market. The declining attractiveness of diesel also changes the attraction of the SUVs nothing: On the one hand, hybrid and electric drives are taking its place, on the other hand, the selection is growing in the small SUV class, where gasoline-powered vehicles also have reasonable consumption levels.
