Test: Jeep Cherokee Longitude 140 PS Diesel Page 2

Day 3 to 13 - Coati chief

The days when the neighbors respond to the test vehicles have become fewer over time. The Cherokee added a few more tongue talks. But not positive ones. The only positive thing remains: the design is so controversial, it promotes communication.

In everyday life, I quickly got used to the 140 PS Diesel. He nailed himself happily, but remains discreetly in the background as soon as you set off. Its 350 Nm allow shift-free driving. At low speeds and blessed with good sound insulation, even long motorway sections can be reeled off in a good mood. The almost 1.9 tons empty weight and the drag coefficient of 0.33 ensure a natural serenity. Such an SUV is simply not a toy for the performance course.

The space available is more important. Behind the wheel you can't complain and in row two the “little Cherokee” demonstrates tribal size. The “secret” storage compartment under the passenger set is practical. It serves as additional storage space for small items and holds valuable items when you park the vehicle.

The color accents in the cockpit create a little mood and interrupt the otherwise ubiquitous plastic black. Anyone who has discovered the small jeep in the windshield (just look for it in the pictures!) Will notice how surprisingly loving the details of the Cherokee are. The adjustable rear seat bench - 15 cm of variance provide more space in the trunk or more space for the passengers - is not just about that.

The multimedia system, however, has not covered itself with fame. During the test, the use of the Bluetooth function (media streaming) was a lottery game. Sometimes it went, sometimes it didn't. This is all the less nice since the rest of the operation is child's play. Route navigation? Is done quickly and safely. Even the voice control looks mature. The use of the DAB radio, the control of the air conditioning system, all works well on the large 8.4 ″ touchscreen. The system then gives up when it comes to streaming my audio books.

Efficiency:

[tabgroup] [tab title=”Everyday driver”] Everyday life (in winter) has an impact of just under 7.0 liters / 100 km.[/tab] [tab title=”Eco-Expert”]A low 5.5 liters is possible, especially if you are cautious .[/tab] [tab title=”Without consideration”]If you push the Cherokee on the brisk path, you will stay just under the 10.0 liter mark![/tab] [/tabgroup]

Day 14 and the realization: Who needs all-wheel drive?

You drive the Cherokee for 14 days and you haven't even missed the all-wheel drive. That is bitter. But that's everyday life. We're not driving through the beaches of Normandy or the Rubicon Trail. And that's exactly why you put a modern SUV on a common platform with other compacts. In the case of the Cherokee, we are talking about a common platform with the Giulia. From Alfa. So from Fiat.

That there is still a version that goes through the prairie with a lot of technology and an elaborate all-wheel drive - it helps the credibility of the brand a lot.

Between Wanne-Eickel and Hildburghausen, I didn't even miss the all-wheel drive in the Cherokee. The traction of the 4 × 2 jeep is sufficient even on wintry roads. When working on the highway, the malfunction of the front-wheel drive is no longer an argument. Here the wind noise, the insulation of the driving noise and the comfort around the world are more important.

The US jeep with the Italian diesel heart is economical with its fuel. Work hard and even the 140 hp are more than enough for everyday life. An automatic start-stop is standard.

With a top speed of 187 km / h, the next big tour can be tackled quickly.

Acquisition and equipment

It is rather rare to be able to request a test car that comes close to the base in its series. The driven Jeep Cherokee Longitude, however, was such a case. Without four-wheel drive, with manual transmission and the 140 PS Diesel, 34.800 € are due.

Those who demand the off-road skills that are equated with the name Jeep have to resort to the Trailhawk-Cherokee. And thus to the 3.2 liter V6 petrol engine with 272 PS. The basic price of the variant of 48.000 € shows that you can no longer speak of the narrow-gauge Indian. In addition, the V6 petrol engine is specified with a NEVZ standard value of 13.9 liters in urban areas, where the driven Cherokee should get along with 6.4. So there are worlds between the variants.

The diesel engine is still available in a 170 hp variant, then also in conjunction with the nine-speed automatic transmission from ZF. Here the price starts as a longitude at € 40.500. All in all, the prices of the little chief are noticeably close to the premium segment.

And finally ...

In the end, everything is different than you imagine. An SUV does not need four-wheel drive and a Jeep can also be a Jeep if it is parked with front-wheel drive.

And the Cherokee just turned out to be a good mix of “old” and “new world”. The marriage with the genes from the rustic off-road world and modern compact car expertise has resulted in a tribal chief with many talents. And who is the Rubicon Trail saves, which misses no four-wheel drive.
