The Cupra Leon: a spirited Spaniard

Seat now has his Leon under the name of the subsidiary Cupra produced. There the Spaniard got a sportier line and a few extra horsepower.

Once again we had visitors from Darmstadt. The Cupra Leon Sportstourer 2.0 TSI was our test car. The copper-colored logo made a clear statement. Spanish temperament has been bundled in this vehicle and is ready to show its strength.

Gray bull

The test car was in magnetic gray metallic. No matt finish like the last Cupra. A bit sobering at first, but the gray goes well with the copper and black details. The bull's head on a black radiator grille, next to it large air inlets. The 19 inch wheels had high-sheen rims in black copper, matching the logo. The light signature with fully LED headlights has a sporty design, with the modern Infinite Light from behind.

Inside, things continue in style. You sit in sports bucket seats made of leather so that you are stable when cornering at brisker speeds. Unfortunately, the seat could not be made tighter, so that slim people do not have optimal support. The other seat settings can be saved using the memory function. In front of one is a super sport multifunction steering wheel. In the center the Cupra logo on a woven carbon-look surface matching the handle for the trunk. The usual functions can be found on the steering wheel, but also the start-stop button at the bottom right and the Cupra mode selector on the left.

At night the Cupra Leon marks its territory

Sounds very spectacular, but it's only the Drive Mode selector. There is Road, Sport, Cupra and Individual. However, the individual modes did not convince me. Sporty gearshifts can also be achieved with a little more pressure on the gas or the paddle shifters. In Sport and Cupra mode, the speed only stays high, even if you drive at the same speed. This only makes the Cupra even thirstier than it already is.

Further equipment was a Beats audio system that leaves nothing to be desired. The connection with the cell phone was also smooth and easy. Wireless charging won't do all of that either. We didn't need the winter package in August, the steering wheel and seat can each be heated, among other things. What is even more beautiful in summer is the panorama roof with sun protection. It was just a bit of a shame that the car complains as soon as it is open due to the air resistance.

Thirsty companion

On the Habby-XXL consumption round, the Spaniard had an average consumption of 8,0 liters of petrol. The least he wanted was on a flat long country road, where 6,5 liters was the least. As soon as it gets curvy with a few hills, we even got 8,3 liters, but the driving pleasure makes up for the consumption there. Still, you don't like standing with the Cupra at the gas station.

What the Spaniard costs

The Cupra Leon is available in the basic version from € 37.420, our engine is available from € 43.680. The test car with its quite luxurious equipment including rims, sound system, panorama roof etc. costs almost € 50.000. Seat is definitely not positioning itself in the cheap segment with Cupra, but rather wants to make an announcement to the sister companies.

Is the Cupra worth it?

You get a sports tourer who lives up to its name. The car is great fun to drive, has enough horsepower for lively trips and can easily be seen in the left lane on the motorway. At the same time, there is enough space for 5 people and a trunk in which 3 large cardboard boxes fit. Instead, a four-legged companion fits in at the back, whereby from a certain size it tends to skin the head instead of enjoying the view to the rear. All in all, the Leon is versatile, has a beautiful design and is also cheaper than other models from the VAG Group with a similar number of horsepower. However, the consumption emulates the powerful brothers, which is why you should definitely not neglect this when considering a purchase.
