The e-up! for everyone - second generation of the smallest electric vehicle from VW

The second will do better. Performance doubled, price reduced, subsidies increased: the colossus Volkswagen is serious about e-mobility. There are several beneficiaries of the new line: the customers, to a modest extent certainly the environment - more specifically the city air - and also Volkswagen in the role of the committed, credible pioneer and pioneer of another idea of mobility.

But there are also some who believed in all of these things six years ago and wanted to be part of it. Those who bought the expensive first e-up! who is suddenly much older than an ordinary car after six years. The fact that the entry-level price for the new model now drops by a smooth thousand and that the state and manufacturers' electric vehicle subsidies will be 2020 percent higher from 50 onwards significantly invalidates the first electric cars in resale. VW Marketing also sees that leasing is more calculable for the customer than ownership, and accordingly has attractive offers for timely use of the e-up! launched. The smallest electric car from Volkswagen can be leased for 159 euros a month.

Battery with higher energy density brings twice the capacity

Was the e-up! Previously a comparatively expensive and limited usable alternative for those who are convinced, besides the gasoline versions and the natural gas (CNG) version, it will now be able to escape this niche because it is much more attractive in terms of price and technology.

One of the promises that battery car advocates always promoted for their cause (or products) was that battery technology would evolve rapidly, putting the tiresome issue of reach into perspective. Right. In the e-up !, whose shape and engine have not changed, Volkswagen is now installing a battery that, thanks to its higher energy density, has twice the capacity for the same volume.

260 km range is a solid value for a city car

The double capacity of the battery does not have a one-to-one effect on the range, but where the first e-up! was presented with a modest 160 kilometers range, which then turned out to be a really euphoric house number in real driving, announces the e-up! of the year 2020 as prospectus value 180 to 260 kilometers. Whereby Volkswagen emphasizes that "real" (on the road) you can really reach 260 kilometers. That's for a city vehicle - the e-up! be - a pretty solid value. And obviously a more honest one: the fully charged test vehicles showed a range of those 260 kilometers at the start, which was less quickly reduced than the trip meter recorded the “distance traveled” during the driving presentation in and around Valencia.

In drive mode B, the e-up! to the king of the Green Wave

The driver can influence this very directly because the e-up! offers both driving and economy programs. On the one hand, with the eco speed steps, the electrical consumers including the engine can be set to low flame and / or the degree of recuperation can be determined. If you set the automatic input to "B", you will retain the full output of 83 PS (61 kW) and the 212 Newton meters of torque that - if desired - the e-up! make it the king of the "green wave". On the other hand, the brake pedal is almost superfluous because every roll without the accelerator pedal is understood as a command to operate the maximum recuperation of kinetic energy. That can be fun. Not just bargain hunters.

Solid and clear design with many sensible extras

Like the e-up! altogether no car of the waiver is. The equipment and design of the vehicle is Volkswagen typical solid and clear. There are the options reasonable extras such as a cruise control, a reversing camera and a lane keeping helper. Even in terms of sound, you can opt for a driving sound that sounds like something about 50 km / h after engine. In the top is the e-up! 130 km / h, which is then to pay but with a significant loss of range.

6.000 Euro Promotion Bonus

The choice of power supply needs to be carefully considered. The e-up! 2020 can also network with the fast charging stations that have now been promised in the hundreds of thousands and charge direct current of up to 50 kW. If this part of the plug is to be unlocked, 675 euros are due. Then it only takes 60 minutes at the aforementioned electricity dispensers to recharge the small Stromer with 80 percent battery capacity. According to VW, it takes around 5 hours at the highly recommended wallbox in the home garage. If you cannot or do not want to carry out such an installation, you have to buy a charging cable with converter and classic Schuko plug for 175 euros and calculate with significantly more time for charging. Even with the new battery, the old guarantee rules for 160.000 kilometers or eight years remain. A considerable age for an electric car and a real mileage for a city car. The new e-up! will be delivered after the beginning of 2020. Prices start at 21 euros. With the funding bonus of 975 euros, the e-up! then also in terms of purchase a clean offer and a real alternative to the combustion engines that are still in the range.
