Accident statistics 1st half of 2021

Fewer Accidents, fewer injured, fewer deaths. The first half of the year showed positive trends in road traffic.

According to accident statistics for the first half of 2021, 1.128 people died in road accidents in Germany. According to preliminary results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) That was 162 people or 12,6 percent fewer than the same period in 2020. At the same time, the number of injuries fell by 10,0 percent to just under 134.800 people. According to calculations by statisticians, there have never been fewer people killed or injured in traffic accidents between January and June since German unification in 1990. 

Accident statistics highest in Saxony-Anhalt

The police registered 1,05 million accidents in the first six months of the year, a decrease of 2,4 percent compared to the same period last year. Property damage remained in almost 935.700 accidents (minus 1,5%), while around 109400 accidents resulted in fatalities or injuries (minus 9,3%).

In Saxony-Anhalt, with 27 deaths per million inhabitants, there was the greatest risk of a fatal road accident, followed by Brandenburg (22 deaths) and Lower Saxony (19 deaths). At 4 and 6, respectively, this value in the city-states of Hamburg and Berlin was well below the national average of 14.
