With the ID Space Vizzion, VW is showing what maximum can be made of the MEB electrical platform. The battery-powered counterpart to the Passat Variant also forces its buyers to rethink - even when it rains.
Will the VW driver of the future force his new car to idle when it rains? This can happen in the first few weeks after purchase. In the view of a stately electric station wagon called ID Space Vizzion, the windshield wiper lever sits on the left behind the steering wheel - and the automatic system spreads out in its traditional position on the right. The customer just has to relearn.
The educational zeal of the Wolfsburg is quite reasonable and looked at Mercedes. That leaves the center console completely free of classic controls. Thanks to the length, the maximum battery size fits under the largest representative of the MEB platform; Space for a lithium-ion battery with a gross energy content of 82 kWh; In the show version, it drives an electric motor on the rear axle with 205 kW / 279 hp. But of course there is more - in the all-wheel drive version. For this purpose, Volkswagen uses an additional electric motor with 75 kW / 102 PS on the front axle; makes around 250 kW / 340 PS system output. Thanks to the excellent wind slippage (drag coefficient 0,24), the standard range should be 590 kilometers (WLTP).
But certainly not when the driver tests more often the 5,4 seconds that the ID Space Vizzion needs from a standstill to the 100 km / h mark. The sports ambitions leave the VW makers anyway rather the corresponding sister brands: The maximum speed is electronically limited at 175 km / h.
The interior is more revolutionary. The electrically powered counterpart to the Passat Variant, for example, only shows the driver a little essential information on a small, classic screen behind the steering wheel. Instead of the virtual cockpit, the big show goes over it and next to it. The head-up display, for example, shows information relevant to the road over a large area and virtually. And as with the Tesla, everything else can be operated on the central 15,6-inch touchscreen in the middle. The button-free zone has never been implemented more radically. But voice control is even smarter. “I need warm feet” - the assistant responds to requests like this and adjusts the warm fan accordingly.
There is also communication through a long light strip in the dashboard. For example, it signals dangers, prompts you to change lanes or indicates that the silent engine is running. Outside, light strips and headlights also signal the approaching driver that he has been recognized via Bluetooth, for example. The lights in the study also show where the airstream slips through openings in the front hood and roof. The aerodynamic show is unlikely to make it into the series. But maybe the vegan “leather” seats with apple juice components - or even the absence of classic door handles? Instead, the VW has illuminated touch areas. They dim up as soon as the car detects that someone is approaching with the vehicle key or a synchronized smartphone. If the illuminated surface is touched, it lights up brighter, the surface pulsates and the door opens. At least that would inspire the children on a family outing. The fire brigade in an accident rescue probably less. But there is still more than a year between Vizzion and reality.
