We screw: Germany's cheapest 328i

You can't get through here

No TÜV, but 12 significant defects!

All beginnings are difficult. At least the protective workshop sees it that way and let us fall through the first attempt. No badge assigned, instead 12 significant defects found on "Germany's cheapest 328i".

However, the shortcomings are less significant than they are quickly remedied:

  • Brake pads axis 1 worn
  • Brake pads axis 2 worn
  • Brake line axis 1 right porous
  • Low beam left without function,
  • Defective engine mounting
  • and so on.

All little things, especially the inadequate engine mounting: Anyone who remembers will remember that I bought the BMW with no gearbox. So that the good straight six does not dangle helplessly from below from the engine compartment, the previous owner set it down gently on the steering gear with a rubber block. It's just stupid if the mechanic doesn't notice anything when changing the clutch and leaves the block in place. Of course, the TÜV inspector didn't believe a word we said ...

The next shortcomings should be eliminated on the brake system and the chassis. The rear axle swing arm is quickly dismantled on the E36ers, if you catch the whole thing a bit and have a press-in tool set at hand (the cheap eBay / Amazon stuff is enough here). To change the spring, however, the brake hose has to be removed, otherwise the spring cannot be relaxed enough. A filigree spring tensioner might work, but ours was too big. As always, Flex saves additional time!

In the Brake hose replacement but then the first problem: the union nut of the brake line had already dissolved in pleasure and could not be opened with a good Hazet line key, heat, file (from M11 to M10) or with good persuasion. The same was true for the front axle. After firm came around and finally after extensive use of flex then finally off.

The brake calipers were then quickly removed, dismantled and the pistons pushed out. In general, the substance of the 28er can be regarded as crispy, which is why the blasting cubicle has to serve instead of the suggested wire brush cleaning - the brakes simply cannot be fiddled with.

Accordingly, we are now waiting for new parts and new tools, because after disassembling the front axle, the anchor plates also dissolved, which makes pulling the wheel bearings inevitable and requires corresponding new parts. In addition, the brake line flaring tool has not yet arrived, which is why we now have to wait for the courier.

But the boys from Mister Rasch live up to their name, which is why we will continue to work happily on the weekend.

In the next episode: "We're flaring up three meters of brake line" and "I'm going to bite off the wheel hub, dirty part!". Keep going.
