Winter camping in the Airstream

Silver cigar, snow-white landscape: The Airstream during winter camping

They are rolling icons with more than eighty years of tradition: the caravans from Airstream. The iconic caravans connect many campers with pictures of sunlit California beaches or giant, glittering aluminum camps in the American deserts. Since Roka-Werk GmbH took over the import to Germany in the year 2007, more and more airstreams are rolling over German and European roads. No wonder that the question arises as to whether the cigar-shaped caravans are also suitable for winter use. The answer is clear: yes, sure.

Contrary to popular belief, there are also cold climates in the US, where airstreams are also used in winter temperatures.

The side walls are insulated with a 60 mm strong EcoBatt glass wool mat, the floor is made of 40 mm hard foam sandwich. This construction effectively protects against cold. The European models are also delivered as standard with a powerful and comfortable hot water heater from the Swedish manufacturer Alde. It not only blows warm air into the vehicle, but pumps warm water through the radiators mounted all around. The campsite can be heated either by electricity (three kW) and / or by gas (5,5 kW). The heating system works as well as the domestic central heating and thus ensures a very pleasant warmth throughout the caravan. Of course, an Airstream fits wonderfully into a snowy winter landscape. As an option, Airstream also offers insulation and heat tracing for the sewer pipes.

Of course, winter campers must also keep an eye on the gas supply with an airstream. It is supplied as standard via two 11 kg gas cylinders. These are controlled by a Truma Duomatic. If the first bottle is empty during the night, it automatically switches to the second bottle. The connection of external 33 kg gas cylinders is just as feasible as a gas fixed connection for longer stays.

Airstream also has an awning as an “entrance lock”. Here the skis and the sled can be stowed away and the clothing can be temporarily stored to dry. In the event of a thaw, solid supports under the wheels and jacks prevent the caravan from sinking into the ground.

Indispensable winter tires are mounted on caravans and coaches winter tires. Snow chains should also be at hand. The best way to install the snow chains is to take them off before going on holiday, so that they can be raised quickly in the event of a fall.
