News: Worldwide new e-car registrations - China takes a leap

The United States remains the world's largest electric car market. Last year, 119.000 purely electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models were sold there. According to the information service provider Inovev, this corresponds to an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous year. Europe is in second place with 93.000 vehicles and an increase of 56 percent. New e-car registrations in China totaled 47.418 units, which is three and a half times the previous year.

In the United States and China, sales are concentrated on a few models. In the United States, market leader Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt and Tesla Model S account for 85 percent of new registrations. In China, BYD Qin, Chery QQ3, Zotye E20 and BAIC E150 EV account for around 75 percent of the market. The market in Europe shows a much more balanced picture. The three most successful models - Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander and Renault Zoe - achieve a combined share of almost 50 percent. Volvo V60 Plug-in-Hybrid and Tesla Model S follow closely behind, as well as a quartet of BMW i3, VW E-Up, VW Golf GTE and Renault Kangoo ZE
