Hydrogen is considered to be one of the energy sources of the future. in the Car internal combustion engine he probably doesn't have a big one.
Gas burners are currently not an option for the federal government when it comes to decarbonising road traffic. The drive is particularly suitable for "off-highway" vehicles such as tractors or construction machinery as well as certain rail vehicles, according to a response to a question from parliament. It is not yet clear whether there will be potential in other areas of commercial vehicle and heavy goods traffic. For all other ground-based means of transport in the area of hydrogen mobility, fuel cell drives should be preferred for reasons of efficiency and because they are emission-free.
Gas burner comes back on
In principle, hydrogen can be used in two ways to drive motor vehicles. It is currently more common to use it to generate electricity in fuel cells to drive electric motors. In principle, however, direct combustion in the gasoline engine is also possible. The fundamental problem here is the low level of efficiency, which is only about half as high as in the fuel cell. In addition, the gas is extremely volatile, so that the engine and fuel lines have to be very tightly sealed. As the last car manufacturer to date, BMW had worked seriously on the hydrogen combustion engine and also launched a small series model, which was discontinued in 2009 after a short period of time. However, the H2 combustion engine is currently making a small comeback as a commercial vehicle engine, and several prototypes have been presented in recent months.
