The top ten at the IAA

Lots of ideas for the city, but also ideas for travel and the distant future: We have ten important cars from IAA select.

Every show has its stars. Here are our ten most important novelties of the IAA mobility.

Audi Grandsphere Concept

Is that still a car or is it already a UFO? Audi's Grandsphere Concept is the golden fish in the large IAA pond. No one is more radical, no one more elegant, our eyes are not glued to any other as on this 5,35 meter long Learjet on four wheels. Two doors running in opposite directions recognize the driver in the aisle and automatically open access to a First Class Lounge. The interior is more of a living space, designed for autonomous driving (level 4). Lounge seats in the front, a back seat in the back, reminiscent of a comfortable sofa.

The steering wheel and pedals retract invisibly with a gesture. Two electric motors provide jet power. They distribute 530 kW / 720 PS to both axles, the 120 kWh battery should cover 720 kilometers with one charge, and thanks to 800 volt technology, the Grandsphere draws power for 300 kilometers in less than ten minutes. It should go into series production in 2025.

ACM City One

So small, so cute, and even house trained. The micro-Stromer City One from the start-up Adaptive City Mobility (ACM) is not only visually a little heartbreaker, but also has a lot to offer. Space for four and a piece of luggage that can grow to 1.450 liters in just a few simple steps. The highlight of the 3,60 meter five-door is in the truest sense of the word in the rear. The four, a good ten kilograms, 2,5 kWh battery packs can be inserted and exchanged individually.

A range of 100 kilometers should be possible, and those who need more can find up to four spare batteries in a special roof rack. The City One should reach a maximum of 110 km / h and be satisfied with around 8,5 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers. 48-volt technology enables fast charging in five hours. If all goes well, we will see the Elektro-Knirps again in 2023 at a price of around 10.000 euros.

BMW i Vision Circular

With the i Vision Circular, BMW shows the rolling future of the year 2040 in compact form. In addition to the environmentally friendly drive, the luxuriously furnished Stromer is characterized by the idea of manufacturing according to the principles of resource-saving circular economy, which should keep the ecological footprint as small as possible and thus ensure a positive CO2 balance. Outwardly, the Vision Circular looks like an aerodynamically optimized minivan, which is demonstrated, among other things, by the absence of exterior mirrors.

Large glass surfaces and futuristic lights are striking. At the rear, a wide strip of taillights extends across the entire width of the vehicle. In the front there are a multitude of diagonal light strips that graphically cite the classic BMW kidney grille. The interior of the Vision Circular is accessed via two portal doors that are hinged on the outside. The absence of a B-pillar ensures a particularly wide entrance opening. Thanks to the glass roof, the passenger cell with four seats conveys a generous feeling of space with an actually small traffic area.

City Transformers

Cars don't have to be wide. The Israeli electric car start-up City Transformer is showing the near-series version of an ultra-compact electric car. The special feature of the Stromer, which is suitable for a maximum of two adults, is its variable vehicle width. With the help of a patented adjustment mechanism, the Stadtfloh should be able to shrink the track width on the front and rear axles from 1,40 to 1,0 meters - even while driving. If necessary, the used traffic area can be adapted to the traffic and driving situation.

When shrunk, up to four City Transformers fit on a car parking lot. The battery is in the underbody for a range of 180 kilometers. Two electric motors mounted close to the wheel on the rear axle provide propulsion - in the small format up to a maximum of 45 km / h, with full track width 90 km / h are possible. Although a representative of the electric lightweight construction class, the Urban EV should offer several airbags, ABS, ESP and air conditioning.

Cupra Urban Rebel

With the Urban Rebell, the Spaniards are showing their idea of a radical e-racer at the IAA. Who says that electric mobility has to be boring? Anyone who sees the Cupra gets a gasp. The provocation begins at the front with a mega-mouth with a giant diffuser, muscular wheelhouses stretch further back, and at the end an XXL rear wing greets you, which really has nothing to do with understatement. The whole thing is wrapped in a shimmering, iridescent paintwork.

Ola! Technically, with the Urban Rebell, Cupra gives the go-ahead for a completely new generation of city cars from Volkswagen, i.e. the ID.1 and the offshoots from Seat and Skoda. They all have one thing in common: around four meters in length and the MEB construction kit. And: that they are built in Seat's Martorell plant in Spain. Of course, much better than the 435 hp rebel from Cupra.

Dacia jogger

At the Renault subsidiary Dacia, as always, there is solid home-style cooking at the IAA at an affordable rate. The jogger is no exception. The crossover will park between Lodgy and Duster from March 15.000 at base prices of around 2022 euros. Space like a van, a bit of an SUV-like look - that's sure to hit the mark. Thanks to a wheelbase of 2,90 meters, the jogger offers up to seven seats and 1.819 liters of storage space. When it comes to the choice of engine, Dacia remains down-to-earth:

A new one-liter turbo gasoline engine has an output of 81 / kW / 110 PS and an LPG engine with 74 kW / 100 PS will have to suffice for the time being. The gas version with its 40 liter LPG tank and the 50 liter petrol tank should create a range of 1.000 kilometers. The jogger will jog electrified from 2023. Then a 1,6 liter gasoline engine will be supported by two electric motors and a 1,2 kWh battery.

mercedes eqe

Mercedes is adding a smaller brother to the EQS luxury-class electric sedan. The EQE is the battery-operated equivalent of the E-Class and will mainly compete against Tesla's Model S from 2022. The range of the business glider is up to 660 kilometers. With its streamlined body, the EQE is optically based on the EQS. With a length of 4,95 meters, the electric sedan stretches almost two centimeters more than the E-Class, but the space inside should be more S-Class level.

The eye-catcher in the cockpit is the hyperscreen screen familiar from the EQS, which extends across the entire width of the vehicle. There are initially two drive variants for the market launch. Mercedes only names the EQE 350 with rear-wheel drive and a 215 kW / 292 PS permanent synchronous motor, which is supplied with energy by a 90 kWh battery. The manufacturer specifies the range at 545 to 660 kilometers

Renault R5 prototype

The biggest comeback of the year is celebrating - alongside ABBA - Renault. With the R5 Prototype, the French are bringing their icon back to the road. Fully energized and with just enough retro in the tin dress that it doesn't seem exhausted or embarrassing. The electric city car, drawn by Head of Design Gilles Vidal, is based on Renault's modular CMF-EV and could inherit the successful Zoe from 2023. "The little friend", as it was advertised earlier, can accommodate different battery sizes, there is talk of a range of up to 700 kilometers.

We may see the most powerful version as an electric rocket with the Alpine emblem. The best, however: the prices for the iconic Stromer should start at well below 30 euros.

Smart Concept # 1

The next Smart breaks with the stylistic guidelines of the previous generations. The two-seater with small dimensions becomes a 4,29 meter long compact vehicle with space for five people. Instead of cute and cuddly like its predecessor, the new one drives up as a crossover with SUV bonds. The Smart Concept # 1 study has a large panoramic glass roof and a distinctive light signature. Black design elements on the wheel arches and 21-inch wheels create a robust impression.

The rear doors are hinged in opposite directions. Thanks to a wheelbase of 2,75 meters, the E-SUV offers plenty of space in the interior. The study still has four seats, the production version will have five. The central control element is the free-standing 3D touchscreen with a screen diagonal of 12,8 inches. An animated avatar supports operation, learns the preferences of the user thanks to artificial intelligence and adapts to them.

VW ID Life

It should actually be called ID.1, but it will still take another 4 years to get started. As a study at the IAA, the smallest E-VW trades as ID.Life. The Stromer is based on a smaller version of the modular electric drive kit (MEB) developed for the small car segment and, unlike the larger ID models, has front-wheel drive. The study’s electric motor has an output of 172 kW / 234 hp and accelerates from 6,9 to 0 km / h in 100 seconds. A 57 kWh battery should be enough for a range of up to 400 kilometers (WLTP).

Cameras and a display replace both the exterior and interior mirrors. The roof, which consists of textile air chambers, can be removed. When selecting the material, sustainability was taken into account. Wood chips are supposed to act as a natural coloring agent in the paint, the air chambers and the bonnet are made entirely of recycled PET bottles. The interior can be redesigned in a few simple steps. In this way, the front bench can be folded down completely. Together with the rear seat, which can also be folded down, an approximately two-meter-long bed is created.
